Why design them together
Daylight and lamplight are one design problem
Every room receives two kinds of light: the daylight its windows admit and the artificial light its fittings provide. They interact all day long. Morning sun floods a south-facing Belgravia drawing room and the lighting should retreat; by late afternoon the balance reverses. Glare crosses a screen, a neighbour's window overlooks a bathroom, summer sun overheats a top-floor study, shading answers each of these, and the lighting responds in turn.
Treating lighting and shading as separate purchases breaks that relationship. The lighting designer assumes daylight the blinds later remove; the blind supplier arrives to find no pocket, no power and nowhere to hide a motor; two control systems appear on the same wall. Designed together, one scheme manages the whole of the light in the room, and one keypad, one app and one set of scenes control it.
A room that softens its blinds against the afternoon sun, then warms its lighting as the daylight fades, never feels automated; it simply feels right. That is the standard the design works to.

Good lighting design is not the selection of attractive fittings. It starts with the room: how it is used through the day, what the interior designer wants the eye to rest on, where daylight enters and when it needs help. From that understanding we build the layers: general lighting that flatters rather than floods, architectural lighting concealed in coves, shadow gaps and joinery, accent lighting for art and texture, task lighting where reading and cooking actually happen, and the decorative fittings that give a room its character.
The technical decisions sit quietly underneath: consistent colour temperature so whites stay white from room to room, dimming that reaches genuinely low levels without flicker, beam angles that light the painting and not the frame, and glare control so the source is felt rather than seen. Specification & fixture selection
The right fitting, specified precisely
A lighting scheme lives or dies in its specification. For every position we specify the fitting, the light source, the colour temperature, the beam, the driver and the dimming method, recorded in schedules a contractor can price and an electrician can install without interpretation. Where the interior designer selects decorative fittings, we confirm each one will dim properly on the chosen control system, specify compatible drivers and agree where those drivers will live so they remain accessible without disturbing finishes.
Practical constraints are respected rather than discovered: fire-rated downlight positions, ingress-protection ratings in bathrooms and external areas; the sealing standard that keeps moisture out of a fitting, ceiling build-ups deep enough for the recessed hardware, and access for the day a driver eventually needs replacing. Specification is also where budgets are protected: a clear schedule invites like-for-like pricing and exposes substitutions before they reach site.
Circuits & wiring layouts
Wiring layouts contractors can price and build
Behind every scene is a circuit strategy. We design the lighting circuits room by room, which fittings switch and dim together, which are controlled individually, and how the circuits map onto the control system's dimmers and drivers, then produce the lighting and shading wiring layouts that turn intent into installation: circuit references, control cabling, driver and power-supply locations, containment routes and the builders' work each position requires.
The benefit is commercial as much as technical. Clear wiring layouts mean electrical contractors price the same job, first-fix happens once, and the control system arrives to find the infrastructure it expects. Circuit decisions also decide flexibility for decades: a room circuited generously can be re-scened endlessly; a room wired as one block can only ever be on or off.
Lighting control & scene setting
Effortless control, room by room
A lighting control system replaces banks of switches with a few considered keypads, and replaces guesswork with scenes, preset combinations of lighting levels and shading positions with names the household actually uses. Morning raises the blinds and lifts the light gently; Dine settles the room around the table; Away runs the home while nobody is in it. Scene setting is a design exercise, not a programming afterthought: we define the scenes with you, room by room, and refine them once the interior is furnished and lived in.
We design around the established platforms, Lutron, Crestron and Control4 among them, and remain deliberately platform-neutral until the project's needs are clear. Whatever the choice, keypad positions, engraving schedules and button logic are coordinated with the interior design, and ordinary, obvious manual control is kept wherever a room wants it.
Automated blinds & curtains
Shading that moves with the day
Automated shading is the quiet half of the scheme. Motorised roller, Roman and venetian blinds, motorised curtain tracks, and layered combinations, a sheer for daytime privacy behind a blackout for sleep, give every window a considered response to sun, overlooking and the hour. In a city of close neighbours and tall glass, that matters daily: glare managed in a Marylebone study without losing the view, privacy in a Knightsbridge bathroom without a net curtain, genuine darkness in a bedroom that faces a streetlight.
Shading also works for the interior itself. Managed daylight helps protect fabrics, art and joinery from the sun's slow bleaching, and moderating solar gain reduces the load the cooling system must answer on a hot afternoon. Automation makes the whole arrangement dependable: positions scheduled to the day, adjusted from the same keypads and scenes as the lighting, and always overridable by hand.
Shading specification & wiring
The detail behind a silent blind
A blind that glides silently into a clean ceiling line is the product of unglamorous detail, resolved early. Our shading design and specification covers the treatment type and operation for each window, motor selection, including whether mains-powered or low-voltage motors suit the project, which decides the wiring the electrician must install, power and control cabling, and the dimensions of every curtain pocket and blind recess: depth for the motor, width for the stacked fabric, access for the day the mechanism needs attention.
Those dimensions are agreed with the architect and built into the ceiling details; the shading wiring layouts are issued to the electrical contractor alongside the lighting layouts; and the window-treatment specialist receives a specification that tells them exactly what the building will provide. Fabric, colour and trimmings remain the interior designer's territory; our specification makes sure the building is ready for whatever they choose.
One home, one system
Integrated with the rest of the home
Lighting and shading rarely live alone. A cinema scene dims the lights, lowers the blackout and starts the projector; a goodnight button secures the ground floor; holiday routines move light and shading so the house reads as occupied. We design the integration with the audiovisual and smart-home systems so these behaviours are simple, dependable and easy to change, one system to the household, however many products sit behind it.
The supporting infrastructure is designed with the same care. Control systems increasingly depend on the home network and Wi-Fi that carries them, and on larger properties lighting and shading may sit alongside heating, cooling and energy monitoring within a residential building management strategy. Why early design matters
What goes wrong without coordination
Most lighting and shading disappointments are not product failures; they are coordination failures, locked in months before anything was installed. The pattern repeats across otherwise excellent projects:
Visible equipment
Motors, brackets and cables on show at the window head because no pocket or recess was ever detailed.
Missing curtain pockets
Ceilings built without pockets, added later at the cost of builders' work, redecoration and programme.
Unsuitable fittings
Fittings that flicker at low levels, mismatch in colour or cannot dim on the installed control system.

Why should lighting and automated shading be designed together?+
A lighting scheme is designed around the daylight a room receives, and shading is what manages that daylight. Treat them as separate purchases and the dependency breaks: the lighting designer assumes daylight the blinds later block, the shading arrives without power or a control channel, and two suppliers fit two wall plates where one keypad should sit. Designing them together puts curtain pockets, motor positions and control cabling on the drawings from day one, and lets a single evening scene set both the light level and the shading position. Procured separately, the two systems usually meet for the first time on site, which is where visible motors and missing pockets come from.
What does residential lighting design include?+
It begins with how each room is used and the daylight it already receives, then builds the artificial layers: general and architectural lighting, accent lighting for art and joinery, task lighting where work is done and decorative fittings chosen with the interior designer. From that concept we develop lighting layouts, fixture specifications and schedules, circuit and wiring layouts, dimming strategy and the control design, coordinated with ceilings, joinery and the other building services so the scheme survives construction intact.
Do we need a lighting control system, or are ordinary dimmers enough?+
It depends on the property. A room with two or three circuits can be perfectly served by well-chosen conventional dimmers, and we say so when it is true. A control system earns its place when rooms carry many circuits, when shading joins the scheme, and when the alternative is a bank of switches no guest could decipher. One keypad with a handful of engraved scenes replaces that wall of controls, and the system dims every load consistently, which mixed conventional dimmers often struggle to do.
What is the difference between motorised blinds and motorised curtains?+
Motorised blinds: roller, Roman or venetian, run on a powered tube or headrail, usually concealed in a ceiling recess or pocket at the window head. Motorised curtains run on a powered track, which needs a curtain pocket deep enough for the track, the motor and the stacked fabric. The fabrics and treatments themselves are typically selected by the interior designer or a window-treatment specialist; our role is the automation: motor types, power, control wiring and the builders' work details that let everything disappear.
When do shading decisions need to be made?+
Earlier than most project teams expect. Curtain pockets and blind recesses live inside the ceiling details, so they must be agreed before ceilings are designed, let alone built. Motor power and control cabling must be routed before walls and ceilings close. Window reveals, sills and joinery all interact with the chosen treatment. Decisions made at design stage cost drawing time; the same decisions made after plastering cost builders' work, redecoration and programme.
Can automated shading be added to an existing home?+
Often, yes, with honest constraints. Where ceilings and window details are being altered anyway, wired shading can usually be designed in properly. In finished rooms the options narrow: wiring routes may be limited, pockets may not exist, and some manufacturers' battery or low-intervention products may be the pragmatic answer. We review the property and say plainly what can be concealed, what would remain visible and what we would not recommend attempting.
Which control platforms do you design around?+
We design around the established platforms, including Lutron, Crestron and Control4, and we start from how the household wants to live rather than from a predetermined brand. Lighting-only projects, combined lighting-and-shading projects and whole-home systems each point to different answers. Final selection depends on functionality, budget, the specialist integrator, project scale and client preference; our role is to make that choice informed and to design the infrastructure so it holds whichever platform is selected.
Who selects the decorative light fittings, you or the interior designer?+
Usually the interior designer leads on decorative fittings, and we support the selection technically: confirming each fitting can be dimmed properly on the proposed control system, specifying compatible drivers and where they will live, keeping colour temperature consistent across a room, and checking bathroom and external fittings carry the right ingress-protection ratings. Architectural lighting, the concealed, integrated layer, is typically ours. The result is one scheme in which both layers behave as intended.
Who supplies the blinds and curtains themselves?+
Normally a window-treatment specialist or the interior designer's preferred supplier, fabric, tracks and finished treatments are their craft. What we contribute is everything the supplier needs the building to provide: shading specifications, motor and power requirements, control wiring, pocket and recess dimensions, and coordination with the electrical contractor so that when the treatments arrive, the building is ready for them. On selected projects, and where included in the appointment, we can also deliver and commission the automation.
Will the system be simple to use day to day?+
That is the design brief, not an afterthought. Everyday functions should never require a manual: keypads carry a few engraved, self-explanatory scenes; a bedside button closes the curtains; switches still behave like switches where that is what a room needs. Automation runs quietly in the background, shading tracking the sun, lighting easing between scenes, while manual control remains immediate and obvious. If a proposed function needs explaining twice, we design it out.
Do you install as well as design?+
AVC is a design-led consultancy that also delivers and commissions systems on selected projects. Many clients appoint us for design and coordination only, with installation carried out by the electrical contractor and specialist suppliers under our coordination. Where delivery, programming or commissioning is included, it is agreed explicitly in the appointment scope; nothing is bundled by default, and the design work stands on its own either way.
