Why design matters
Infrastructure, not gadgets
In a large residence, the network has quietly become a building service, as fundamental as power or heating. Television and music, video calls, smart-home and lighting controls, automated shading, door entry and security, home offices and a growing number of connected appliances all run over the same infrastructure. When that infrastructure is an afterthought, every one of those systems inherits its weaknesses.
Our approach is the same one we bring to residential MEP consulting and design: treat the network as engineered infrastructure, design it around the building and the household, coordinate it with every other discipline, and document it so it can be built, commissioned and supported properly. Wireless design
Whole-home Wi-Fi coverage, planned not hoped for
London's finest homes are among the hardest wireless environments in the country. Solid masonry, lath and plaster, foil-backed insulation, steel structure and deep basement excavations all defeat the single-router approach, which is why a six-storey townhouse in Belgravia or a lateral apartment in Knightsbridge behaves so differently from the open-plan house the consumer products were designed for.
We design wireless coverage the way lighting is designed: room by room, floor by floor, against the building's actual construction. Access points; the fixed devices that broadcast the wireless network, are positioned for even, dependable coverage across bedrooms, entertaining spaces, offices, basements, terraces and garden rooms, each fed by its own cable back to the central equipment.
Placement is as much an interior question as a technical one. We coordinate access-point positions with ceiling designs and lighting layouts, agree finishes and locations with the interior designer, and are honest about the rare occasions when full concealment and full performance genuinely conflict.
Structured cabling
The wired backbone behind every good wireless network
Every dependable wireless network is, underneath, a wired one. Access points need cables. Televisions, media players, cinema equipment, desks, cameras, control processors and appliances all perform best on a fixed connection, and every device moved onto a cable frees the wireless network for the phones, tablets and laptops that genuinely move around the house.
Our structured-cabling design specifies the data outlets, copper and fibre cabling, containment and routes for the whole property: where every outlet goes and why, how cables travel through a real structure, where they terminate and how everything is identified. The layouts are produced in AutoCAD and Revit and coordinated with the electrical design, the joinery and the other services competing for the same voids, so the cabling is buildable, accessible and documented, not improvised on site.
Cabling is the cheapest part of a project while walls and ceilings are open, and among the most disruptive to add once decoration is complete. A thorough layout, done once, is what allows the network, and everything that rides on it, to evolve for years without touching the fabric of finished rooms.
Equipment-rack design
One engineered home for all the equipment
Somewhere in every connected home, the cables meet the equipment. Whether that place is an engineered rack or a tangle in a cupboard is a design decision, and it determines how the system performs, how it is maintained and how it looks when a panel is opened ten years from now.
We design the equipment rack as a small piece of building services: its location, typically a ventilated comms cupboard, plant space or basement services area: its dedicated power supplies, its cooling and ventilation, the equipment layout, cable management, labelling and maintenance access. The space itself is agreed with the architect early, because a rack that was never allocated a home ends up in whichever cupboard is left over.
The same rack usually serves the audiovisual and control systems as well, so we coordinate its design with the smart home & AV systems it supports: one position, one power strategy, one tidy result.
Security & separation
A private network that behaves like one
A large household is not one user; it is a family, guests, staff, home offices, building systems and dozens of connected devices of varying trustworthiness, all sharing the same infrastructure. Treating them identically is convenient for the equipment and careless for the household.
Where appropriate, we design the network in separated segments: family devices, guests, work, building systems and smart devices each in their own lane, so a compromised gadget cannot reach personal data, a visitor can be given simple internet access without access to the house, and a home office can meet an employer's security expectations. The practical benefit is straightforward, problems stay contained, and privacy is protected by architecture rather than by hope.
Alongside separation, the design addresses the fundamentals: secure configuration of the equipment, controlled remote access for the people and systems that genuinely need it, and a documented setup that can be audited and maintained. Everything is scaled to the household, enough security to be safe, never so much that the family needs a manual to use its own home.

Remote monitoring and managed support
A household should not be its own IT department. Where included in the appointment, we design the network for remote monitoring and managed support: the system reports its own health, faults are identified early, often before the household notices them, and many issues can be investigated and resolved remotely, without waiting for an engineer to travel across London.
Just as important is what supportability means at design stage. We document the installation properly: cable schedules, equipment records, network architecture and configuration information, so the system can be maintained over its life by any competent party. A network that only its original installer understands is not an asset; it is a dependency.
For the household, the experience is deliberately simple: one point of contact, plain-English communication, and a system that mostly just works, because the design assumed, from the first drawing, that someone would have to look after it.

Network infrastructure touches almost every other trade: containment shares voids with ductwork and pipework, access points sit on the same ceilings as lighting, outlets belong in joinery, and the equipment space needs power and ventilation from the electrical and mechanical designs. That is why we design it as part of the coordinated MEP package rather than as a bolt-on.
We produce AutoCAD drawings and Revit models, participate in BIM coordination, and work directly with architects, interior designers, main contractors, electrical contractors and the project's AV and smart-home specialists. Device positions are agreed on drawings, not negotiated on site; builders' work is scheduled, not discovered; and every party prices and builds from the same coordinated information.
For integrators and AV companies in particular, our role is complementary: we design and document the infrastructure their systems depend on, so they can concentrate on the experience rather than on missing cables and absent rack space.

Nobody can predict every technology a home will host over the next twenty years, and we will not pretend to. Why does a large London home need a professionally designed network?+
Because almost everything in a modern residence now depends on it: television and music, video calls, smart-home and lighting controls, automated shading, security systems, home offices and a growing population of connected appliances. A consumer router at one end of a large, solid-walled property was never designed to carry that load across five or six floors. Professional design treats the network as building infrastructure: planned wireless coverage, a wired backbone, secure separation between different uses, tidy central equipment and clear documentation, so it performs quietly for years rather than being rebuilt gadget by gadget.
Why is Wi-Fi so unreliable in period properties?+
Solid masonry walls, lath-and-plaster construction, foil-backed insulation, underfloor-heating screeds and steel structure all absorb or reflect wireless signal, and a basement excavation adds a floor that a single router simply cannot reach. The answer is not a stronger router but a designed system: access points positioned floor by floor and room by room, each fed by its own cable back to central equipment, with coverage planned around the building's actual construction. That is why period townhouses and lateral apartments behave so differently, and why the design work matters more than the hardware.
If the Wi-Fi is good, do we still need cabling?+
Yes. Every dependable wireless network is a wired network with wireless edges: each access point needs a cable, and fixed equipment: televisions, media players, cinema equipment, desks, cameras, control processors, performs best on a wired connection, which also frees the wireless network for the devices that genuinely move around. Cabling is inexpensive to install while walls and ceilings are open and disruptive to add after decoration, so the structured-cabling layout is one of the most valuable drawings a project can commission.
Can access points be discreet?+
Largely, yes. Access points are positioned as part of the interior design, not added to it: ceiling-mounted units aligned with lighting layouts, positions agreed with the interior designer, finishes considered and clutter avoided. Where a client wants devices fully concealed we assess the options honestly, because some concealment locations degrade performance; the craft is achieving discretion and coverage together, and we tell you plainly when a preferred position involves a trade-off.

In a purpose-designed equipment rack in a sensible location, typically a ventilated comms cupboard, a plant space or a basement services area. The rack design covers the equipment layout, dedicated power, cooling and ventilation, cable management and labelling, and maintenance access, coordinated with the joinery and the architectural plans. Done properly, the result is one tidy, engineered position for everything, not routers on bookshelves and cables behind the television.

When should the network be designed?+
Early, ideally alongside the architectural and interior design. Cable routes and containment compete for the same voids as ductwork and pipework, access-point positions belong on the reflected ceiling plans with the lighting, and the equipment rack needs a genuine allocated space with power and ventilation. Decided on drawings, these are small matters; discovered after decoration, they mean lifted floors and chased walls in finished rooms.
Can you improve an existing home's network without redecorating?+
Often, though it depends on the property. We start by reviewing what exists, coverage, cabling, equipment and known problem areas, because existing cabling and containment can sometimes be reused intelligently, and equipment and configuration changes alone can resolve some issues. Where new cabling is genuinely unavoidable we say so, plan the routes to minimise disruption and, where possible, align the work with any decoration or maintenance already programmed.
Do you install the network as well as design it?+
AVC is a design-led consultancy that also delivers and commissions systems on selected projects. Design appointments stand on their own, many clients appoint us to design and coordinate the infrastructure, with installation carried out by specialist contractors or the project's integrator. Where delivery and commissioning are included, that is agreed explicitly in the scope, so responsibilities are clear from the outset.
Will you work with our AV company or smart-home integrator?+
Yes, and gladly. Our role is the infrastructure their systems depend on: cabling, coverage, rack space, power and network architecture, designed and documented so the integrator can concentrate on the experience rather than on missing sockets. We coordinate requirements with AV companies, smart-home integrators and security specialists as a matter of course, and the drawings we produce give every party the same coordinated information.
What should we include with an initial enquiry?+
Whatever exists: architectural drawings or floor plans, the number of floors, any known problem areas, an idea of how the household uses technology, offices, cinema, streaming, smart-home ambitions, and photographs if drawings are not available.
