No building service works alone. Air conditioning needs electrical power, drainage for condensate and a controls strategy. Lighting needs circuit design before it needs fittings. A smart home is only as dependable as the network beneath it. Water services need plant space and routes the architecture can accept. And every one of those decisions surfaces in the interior – as a grille, a keypad, a ceiling void, a riser.
The construction industry usually splits these interdependencies across an M&E consultant, several subcontractors and a technology integrator, and the gaps between them become variations, delays and compromises. AVC provides MEP design and consultancy for prime residential and high-end commercial projects – as an independent design consultant, alongside an established M&E practice, or as the design half of a design-and-build appointment.

Mechanical Engineering

Public Health Engineering & Installations
In MEP engineering, public health means the building's water systems – supply, hot water, drainage and sanitation. AVC designs and installs them around demand, pressure, hygiene, noise and maintenance, so five bathrooms can run at once and the drainage is never heard through a bedroom wall.

Frequently asked questions
When should an MEP consultant become involved?+
At feasibility or concept stage, ideally – before plant space, risers and ceiling zones are fixed. Early input steers those spatial decisions while they are still free; later input has to work within them. AVC does join projects at every later stage, including on site, but each stage closes options the previous one held open.
Can AVC provide design without installation?+
Yes. AVC acts as an independent MEP design consultant on many projects – producing the calculations, drawings, specifications and tender information for others to build, with review and site support during construction if wanted. Design-only appointments carry no obligation to use AVC for delivery.
Can AVC take responsibility for design and installation together?+
Yes – that is the model we believe in most. A design-and-build appointment gives the project one accountable party from calculations to commissioning, which removes the classic gap between what was designed and what was installed. It also means the designer stays in the room until the systems are proven.
Can AVC work with an existing M&E consultant?+
Comfortably, and we often do. In that arrangement the consultant holds design authority and AVC delivers as specialist contractor – contributing technical submissions, coordination drawings, controls integration and specialist-system expertise, and commissioning against the consultant's design intent.
What drawings does AVC need for an initial review?+
Whatever exists. Architectural plans are enough to begin at concept stage; add electrical, mechanical or lighting drawings, a specification or a programme if they exist. Early-stage projects with nothing but a floor plan and an ambition are genuinely welcome – that is where we add the most value.
Does AVC work on listed London properties?+
Yes. Listed and heritage buildings are a significant part of prime London work, and they reward exactly what AVC does: routing services within tight voids, concealing plant, protecting fabric and coordinating with conservation requirements. Project-specific consents remain the domain of the planning and heritage consultants, and we design around them.
Can mechanical, electrical and smart-home systems be coordinated in one BIM model?+
Yes – that is how AVC works by default. Mechanical, electrical, public health and technology systems are modelled and clash-detected in one federated model, so a duct, a cable tray and a speaker never contest the same void on site. One model is also the foundation for accurate builders' work and construction documentation.
Which London project types does AVC undertake?+
Prime houses, apartments and penthouses, listed and heritage properties, complete refurbishments and residential developments – alongside high-end commercial work including offices, boutique hotels, restaurants and members' clubs. The common thread is technically demanding, design-led buildings where systems must work as one.
Does AVC commission systems installed by others?+
Where the installation is sound, yes. We survey what has been installed, complete or correct what commissioning requires, then test, balance and document the systems properly. It is a regular route onto projects where a specialist has left or a package was never properly closed out.
Can AVC support projects already under construction?+
Yes. Live projects come to us to recover coordination, complete a specialist package, or take over a technology scope before first fix closes. The options are narrower than at design stage, but a structured review of drawings, procurement and programme usually finds more room to act than the project team expects.
