Lighting is the one building service every visitor judges within seconds of walking in, yet the distance between a beautiful lighting design and a beautiful lit room is entirely electrical. Between the designer's drawings and the finished interior sit circuits, drivers, dimming protocols, control panels and programming – and any weakness in that chain shows up on the ceiling. A cove that flickers at low level, a scene that steps instead of fades, a keypad that no longer matches how the rooms are used: all of it traces back to engineering decisions made months earlier.
AVC Integrations installs and engineers architectural lighting for design-led properties across London – interior, exterior and facade – and takes responsibility for the layer the lighting designer cannot: circuiting, driver and dimmer selection, DALI and phase-dimming design, control panels and the commissioning sessions where scenes are finally set. An architectural lighting system is the engineered whole behind a lighting design – the circuits, drivers, dimming, control hardware and programmed scenes that turn a designer's drawings into light a household actually uses. AVC Integrations installs, controls and commissions these systems for design-led residential and commercial projects across London, working alongside lighting designers and interior designers to protect the design intent from first fix through to after-dark scene setting.
The starting point
The problem: good lighting design, lost in delivery
Most disappointing lighting schemes were well designed. They fail in the gap between the lighting designer's drawings and the electrical installation: fittings procured without checking how their drivers behave on the specified dimmer, circuits grouped for wiring convenience rather than the scenes the designer imagined, drivers buried behind plasterboard with no access, control panels squeezed into cupboards as an afterthought. Each shortcut is invisible on a programme and obvious on a ceiling – flicker at low level, uneven fade curves, a cove that dies before it dims, scenes that can never be set because the circuiting will not allow them.
The deeper issue is ownership. The lighting designer owns the intent, the electrical contractor owns the wiring, and on many projects nobody owns the translation between them. When dimming misbehaves after handover, that gap becomes a dispute rather than a fix. AVC exists to close it – one team accountable for the electrical engineering, the control system and the commissioned result.
How AVC works
The AVC approach: engineering in service of the design
We treat the lighting designer's package as an engineering document, not just a shopping list. Every circuit is planned against the scenes it must serve; every fitting's driver is matched to its dimming method before anything is ordered – DALI, the IEC 62386 standard protocol, where individual addressing and reliable low-level dimming earn their place; phase dimming where a simpler scheme genuinely suits the fittings; 0–10 V and 1–10 V where specific drivers require it; and DMX where a dynamic or colour-changing scheme calls for it. Control panels are engineered and located deliberately, with driver positions that remain accessible after the decorators leave.
On integrated projects the control layer is typically Lutron – HomeWorks on whole-property schemes – or a wider platform such as Crestron or Control4 where lighting sits alongside shading and audio-visual systems. Because AVC delivers the electrical installation and the control system as one scope, the handoffs that usually erode a design simply do not exist: the same team wires the circuit, programs the processor and stands in the room after dark setting scenes with the designer and the client.

Lighting runs through almost every AVC electrical appointment. Depending on the project, the scope typically covers:
Installation
- Interior architectural lighting – downlights, linear details, cove and joinery lighting set out precisely
- Exterior, garden and facade lighting with wiring engineered for external conditions
- Circuit design and installation in accordance with BS 7671
- Driver and transformer positioning with maintenance access preserved

Three designers, one ceiling
A lighting scheme is negotiated between the lighting designer, the interior designer and the engineering that carries them both – and the negotiation only works on drawings. We sit in the middle of that conversation deliberately, translating design intent into circuits and details while the architecture can still move, so that nothing the designers care about is surrendered to site convenience.

Timing
Why early involvement matters
The decisions that make or break a lighting scheme close early: ceiling build-ups that determine whether a cove is possible, joinery details that either conceal a driver or entomb it, circuit zoning that either serves the scenes or forbids them, and the wall space where panels and keypads must eventually live. Brought in at design stage, we resolve all of this on paper alongside the lighting designer – and the compatibility checks that prevent flicker happen before a single fitting is ordered.
Appointed late, the same questions are answered by whatever the site allows, and the design pays for it in compromises nobody chose. We do join projects mid-construction and recover what can be recovered – but a lighting scheme is protected far more cheaply at the drawing board than at the snagging list.

Frequently asked questions
Will the specified fittings actually dim properly?+
Only if the driver in each fitting and the dimmer controlling it are matched – which is a check, not an assumption. We review the lighting schedule before procurement, confirm how each driver behaves with the proposed dimming method, and flag substitutions when a fitting cannot deliver the smooth low-level performance the design expects. Most flicker complaints trace back to this check never having been done.
Should we use DALI or phase dimming?+
Usually both, chosen circuit by circuit. DALI – the IEC 62386 standard protocol – gives each fitting its own address, which suits layered schemes where grouping and fade behaviour matter and where reliable dimming to very low levels is expected. Phase dimming remains the right answer for circuits of simple fittings where addressability adds cost without adding anything the design needs. The choice is a design decision we make with the lighting designer, not a default.
Does AVC do the lighting design itself?+
Our role is the engineering and delivery of the scheme, and on design-led projects we prefer working alongside a specialist lighting designer – we protect their intent rather than replace it. Where a project has no lighting designer, we advise honestly on whether one is needed and can develop the electrical lighting design – circuits, control and dimming – as part of our design scope.
How does scene setting actually work?+
Scenes are programmed once the installation is commissioned, and the important sessions happen after dark, when the light can be judged as it will be lived with. We sit with the lighting designer and the client, adjust levels and fade times room by room, and store the results as named scenes on keypads and the control system. We then return after occupation, because the way a household really uses its rooms only emerges with time.
Can you light gardens, terraces and facades as well?+
Yes – exterior and facade lighting is part of the same scope, engineered for external conditions and controlled from the same system as the interior so the whole property can respond to one scene or schedule. We coordinate routes and fixing positions with the landscape designer and the elevations early, because exterior wiring is far harder to add gracefully once hard landscaping is complete.
Which control platform should we choose?+
It depends on the scope of control the project wants. Lutron is our usual recommendation where lighting and shading lead the brief – HomeWorks on whole-property schemes – while Crestron or Control4 suit projects where lighting sits inside a wider audio-visual and smart-home system. The honest answer is project-specific, and we set out the options against the brief rather than defaulting to one badge.
Can lighting control be added to an existing property?+
Often, yes – but the route depends on the wiring that exists. Some properties can adopt centralised dimming with modest rewiring; others suit hybrid approaches where new control is applied to existing circuits. We survey first, say plainly what each option involves, and design around the building rather than promising an outcome the wiring cannot support.
What about emergency lighting?+
Where the building requires emergency lighting – common in commercial interiors and larger residential schemes – we design and install it within the architectural scheme rather than bolting it on, selecting discreet fittings and conversion options that satisfy the requirement without announcing themselves. Testing and certification are included in commissioning and handover.
