A sophisticated residential project is a web of interconnected systems. MEP: mechanical, electrical and public health, the industry shorthand for a building's engineered services, is only the start. Air conditioning shapes ceilings, joinery and plant space. Ventilation needs ducts, grilles, acoustic care and external penetrations. Lighting drives circuits, controls and ceiling coordination. Automated shading reaches into window details, curtain pockets, power and control wiring. Smart-home requirements decide keypads, interfaces, cabling and equipment locations. Audiovisual systems demand power, data, containment, cooling and joinery. And every one of these competes for the same limited ceiling voids, risers and plant space.

Our mechanical design covers heating, cooling and residential air conditioning, fresh-air and extract ventilation, and heat-recovery ventilation where the property suits it, together with everything those systems imply: plant and equipment locations, ductwork and pipework routes, condensate drainage, grilles and diffusers, controls and zoning, acoustics, maintenance access and external plant coordination.

The design questions are as much architectural as technical. Where can equipment be concealed? How do ducts and pipes route through a real structure? Where are access panels genuinely required, and where can they be avoided? How do grilles align with ceilings, shadow gaps and joinery? How will noise and airflow feel in the finished room, and how will the system be maintained for decades?

Where discretion matters we design with plaster-in grilles, linear slot diffusers, concealed ducted units, carefully aligned extract grilles and integrated access solutions. Not every component can be concealed in every property: the right solution always depends on available space, technical requirements and the architectural conditions, which is exactly why the design work matters.

The electrical design is the quiet backbone of a modern residence. Our scope covers incoming-supply considerations and load assessment, main and sub-distribution with a clear distribution-board strategy, general and small power, dedicated equipment supplies, lighting circuits, and the power and data infrastructure that smart-home, audiovisual and mechanical systems depend on: together with life-safety and statutory systems, earthing, surge protection, plant-room coordination, and electric-vehicle charging or backup power where relevant to the project.

We design future-ready infrastructure in the honest sense of the phrase: appropriate spare capacity, distribution, containment and cabling routes for reasonably foreseeable needs, not a promise to predict every technology that may arrive. The result is an installation that is fit for purpose today, coordinated with the complete MEP package, and able to absorb tomorrow's requirements without opening finished walls.

Smart-home design should begin with how you want to live, not with a predetermined brand, and never with complexity for its own sake. We advise on and design around the established platforms, including Crestron, Lutron and Control4, and help clients and design teams think through lighting control, shading, heating and cooling, audiovisual integration, door entry, access and security, interfaces and keypads, mobile and remote access, equipment locations, network requirements and cabling.

Two principles guide every recommendation. The home must be intuitive, everyday functions should never require a manual, and sensible manual control is kept where it belongs. And the system must be supportable, reliable, maintainable and specified with future support in mind. Final platform selection depends on functionality, budget, the specialist integrator, project scale and, above all, client preference.

Audiovisual design

Entertainment without visual clutter

We design and coordinate the infrastructure for multi-room and whole-home audio, multi-room video, dedicated home cinemas and media rooms: television locations and concealed televisions, projectors and screens, in-wall and in-ceiling speakers, equipment racks, structured cabling, Wi-Fi coverage, equipment cooling and control-system integration. The focus is the experience in the room, not the specification sheet.

Audiovisual decisions belong early in the programme: speaker positions, screens, racks, cabling, power, ventilation, acoustics and joinery all affect the architecture and the interior design. Considered at design stage, a cinema is architecture; added late, it is furniture with cables.

Lighting, daylight & automated shading

Lighting begins with daylight

Good lighting design is not the selection of decorative fittings. It starts with the light a room already receives: window orientation, how daylight moves through the day, glare, privacy and solar gain. Only then comes the artificial layer: dimming, scenes, colour temperature, accent, task, decorative and architectural lighting, external lighting where included, and the controls that bind it together, designed around the household's routines and how each room is actually used.

This is why lighting and shading must be designed together. Automated blinds and curtains balance daylight, manage glare, support privacy, moderate solar gain, help protect interiors and take their place in lighting scenes, so a room can shift from morning to evening, from work to entertaining, without anyone touching a switch.

By balancing natural daylight, artificial light and automated shading, each room can respond more naturally to the time of day, its purpose and the client's preferences.

AutoCAD, Revit & BIM coordination

Resolve the details before construction

The design is only as good as the information that carries it. We produce AutoCAD drawings and Revit 3D models and participate in BIM coordination: MEP layouts, coordinated reflected ceiling plans, plant-room layouts, equipment schedules, builders' work information, service routes, riser and ceiling-void coordination, technical and installation details, design reviews and mark-ups, clash reviews, tender information and construction-stage coordination.

The practical benefits are concrete: better-informed decisions, earlier identification of spatial conflicts, fewer unresolved details, clearer tender information and genuinely comparable contractor quotations, improved coordination between trades, less improvisation on site, and better protection of the architectural and interior-design intent. Detailed coordination helps identify and reduce avoidable clashes before installation; we will never promise a clash-free site, only far fewer surprises on it.

Frequently asked questions

What does a residential MEP consultant do?+

MEP stands for mechanical, electrical and public health: the building services that make a home work: heating, cooling, ventilation, power, lighting, water and drainage, together with the technology systems that control them. A residential MEP consultant designs those services around the architecture and the way the household lives, coordinates them with one another and with the interior design, and produces the drawings and schedules contractors need to price and build the work accurately. Unlike an installation contractor, a consultant's role is design, coordination and protecting the client's interests, not selling a particular product.

What is included in a residential MEP design package?+

It depends on the agreed scope, but a complete package typically covers mechanical design (air conditioning, heating and ventilation), electrical design (power, distribution, data and lighting circuits), and: where included: lighting design, automated shading, smart-home, audiovisual and network infrastructure, all coordinated in AutoCAD drawings and Revit models with equipment schedules, builders' work information and tender documentation. The appointment defines the final deliverables; nothing is included by default that the project does not need.

When should an MEP consultant be appointed?+

As early as is sensible, ideally while the architectural and interior design is still developing. Services compete for ceiling voids, risers and plant space, and decisions about grilles, keypads, curtain pockets and equipment rooms all affect the architecture. Early appointment means those decisions are made on drawings, where change is cheap, rather than on site, where it is disruptive.

Can you work with our architect and interior designer?+

Yes; it is how we prefer to work. We treat the architectural and interior-design intent as a constraint to protect, coordinate our information with theirs, and attend design-team meetings where useful. Much of our role is translating between the design team, the specialist installers and the contractor.

Can you review an existing MEP design?+

Yes. We review existing mechanical, electrical or technology designs against the architecture, the interior design and buildability: identifying spatial conflicts, missing coordination, unclear tender information and opportunities to reduce visual intrusion, and issue clear comments and mark-ups the team can act on.

Do you produce AutoCAD and Revit drawings?+

Yes. We produce AutoCAD drawings and coordinated Revit 3D models, including MEP layouts, reflected ceiling coordination, plant-room layouts, builders' work information and installation details, and we participate in BIM coordination alongside the wider design team.

Can you coordinate air conditioning with lighting and joinery?+

Yes; that coordination is the heart of the service. Ductwork, concealed units, plaster-in grilles and linear diffusers are positioned with the ceiling design, the lighting layout and the joinery drawings so the finished rooms read as architecture, not as a compromise between trades.

Do you advise on Crestron, Lutron and Control4?+

Yes. We help clients and design teams compare and specify control platforms including Crestron, Lutron and Control4, starting from how the household wants to live rather than from a predetermined brand. Final selection depends on functionality, budget, the specialist integrator, project scale and client preference.

Why should lighting and automated shading be designed together?+

Because both control the same thing: light in a room. Daylight, glare, privacy, solar gain and artificial lighting interact all day long. Designing blinds and curtains with the lighting scheme, rather than after it, means curtain pockets, motor positions, power and controls are in the drawings from the start, and lighting scenes can include the shading naturally.

Can you design multi-room audio and home-cinema infrastructure?+

Yes. We design and coordinate the infrastructure for multi-room audio and video, dedicated cinemas and media rooms: speaker and screen positions, equipment racks, structured cabling, Wi-Fi coverage, power, cooling and the joinery interfaces, so the architecture accommodates the experience from the outset.

Can you assist during tender and construction?+

Where included in the appointment, yes: preparing tender information, reviewing contractor quotations so they are genuinely comparable, answering technical queries, reviewing installation on site and coordinating commissioning and handover.

Do you provide installation as well as design?+

AVC is a design-led consultancy that also delivers and commissions systems on selected projects. Design appointments stand on their own, many clients appoint us for design and coordination only, with installation tendered to specialist contractors. Where delivery is included, it is agreed explicitly in the scope.

Can you support listed or spatially constrained properties?+

Yes. Much of our Central London work involves listed buildings, conservation areas and tight existing structures, where plant space, riser routes and external equipment positions need particular care. We design within those constraints rather than pretending they do not exist, and we are candid when a requirement and a building are genuinely incompatible.

What information should we send with an initial enquiry?+

Whatever exists: architectural drawings, interior layouts, surveys, specifications or simply photographs and a description. Early-stage projects without complete information are welcome; part of our role is helping define the brief.
