The starting point
The problem: comfort split across trades
On many projects the mechanical scope arrives in fragments – an air-conditioning contractor, a separate ventilation installer, heating under the plumber and controls left to whoever turns up last. Each fragment can be individually competent, yet the building still underperforms, because the failures live at the interfaces: ductwork and pipework competing for the same void, fresh-air rates that ignore the cooling strategy, extract that fights the heat recovery, and a controls layer nobody designed. When the occupant is too warm, no single party owns the answer.
The second failure is timing. Mechanical services shape ceiling depths, riser positions, plant space and facade penetrations, and those decisions close early in the architectural design. Engage the discipline late and the systems must be forced into whatever space is left – with the compromises negotiated on site, at site prices. On refurbishments and commercial fit-outs the same lateness surfaces as landlord constraints, fire-strategy conflicts and occupied floors discovered mid-programme rather than at the survey.
How AVC works
The AVC approach: one scope, engineered end to end
We start from calculation, not catalogue. Heating and cooling loads, ventilation rates and extract duties are determined room by room from the architectural information – glazing, orientation, occupancy and use – and those figures drive every selection that follows. The systems are then designed into the building as a set: cooling and ventilation sharing routes and voids deliberately, condensate falling with the drainage strategy, plant placed for acoustics, planning and maintenance access, and grilles agreed with the interior design rather than imposed on it.
And because the electrical, controls and integration scopes usually sit with AVC too, the mechanical package reaches site with its power supplies, interlocks and control interfaces agreed on drawings rather than improvised at second fix. One team carries the design through installation and commissioning, which is where accountability matters most – every zone is proven against the design figures before handover, not signed off on the assumption that it will probably be fine.

Mechanical services occupy more of a building than any other discipline, which makes coordination the real work. Ductwork, pipework, condensate, power and controls are resolved against structure, joinery, lighting and public health drainage while the design is still on drawings – so that voids close once, grilles land where the interior designer intended, and site time is spent installing rather than negotiating.

Timing
Why the mechanical conversation should start early
Ceiling depths, riser positions, plant space, facade penetrations and acoustic treatment are all fixed while the architecture is still fluid – and they are precisely the things a mechanical system needs. Bring the engineering in at concept or developed design and comfort is built into the fabric of the scheme; bring it in after tender and every requirement becomes a negotiation with decisions that have already closed. That difference eventually lands somewhere: in variations, in lost ceiling height, in programme.
Early involvement also settles the questions clients care about most – can the units be hidden, where does the plant go, will it be quiet – while every answer is still cheap. AVC joins projects at any stage, including on site, but the earliest conversation is reliably the best value on the project.

Do you deliver the full mechanical scope, or can you install to a consultant's design?+
Both. On residential projects we most often hold the design as well as the installation, carrying one accountability from calculation to commissioning. On commercial fit-outs we regularly install and commission against a consultant's design – and where we find coordination gaps in that design, we raise them on drawings rather than build them into the ceiling.
Can you replace mechanical systems in an occupied building?+
Yes – end-of-life replacement in occupied homes and workplaces is a regular part of our workload. We start from a survey of what exists, judge which routes and infrastructure have honest life left in them, and sequence the works room by room or floor by floor around occupation, with protection and programme communication agreed before anyone starts. The aim is a building that keeps functioning while its services are renewed.
How do you make sure the systems are quiet?+
Acoustics is treated as a design input, not a snag. Unit selection, duct sizing, air velocities, attenuation, anti-vibration mounting and condenser placement are all assessed at design stage, and where a project carries formal acoustic criteria – planning conditions or an acoustician's report – the mechanical design is developed against them. Quiet systems are designed; they are rarely retrofitted.
Do you work on commercial projects as well as homes?+
Yes. We deliver mechanical packages for offices, restaurants and hospitality fit-outs – fan coils, fresh-air and extract ventilation, heat recovery and controls – alongside our prime residential work. That includes the realities of commercial delivery: landlord approvals, fire and smoke damper coordination with the fire strategy, and commissioning records prepared for handover.
Can heating, cooling and ventilation be controlled from one system?+
Yes, and they should be. Zoning and controls philosophy are decided at design stage, then delivered either through the equipment manufacturers' own controls or integrated into a smart-home platform or building management system. Because AVC typically delivers the electrical and controls scopes too, those interfaces are engineered rather than improvised.
How do you approach ventilation and overheating compliance?+
Ventilation provision is designed against Building Regulations Part F, with rates determined through calculation for each project rather than assumed. Where Part O overheating assessments shape a scheme, the cooling and ventilation strategy is developed alongside them, so compliance and comfort come from the same design rather than competing with each other.
Which manufacturers do you install?+
For refrigerant-based comfort cooling we specify Daikin VRV, for the reasons set out on its dedicated page – concealed indoor unit options, flexible topology and strong UK support. MVHR and air-handling equipment is selected project by project against duty, void space and acoustic requirements. Selections are engineering decisions, and where a different approach suits a project better, we say so.
What support do you provide after handover?+
Handover includes demonstration, operation and maintenance documentation and commissioning records – and then a planned maintenance path, because mechanical systems only keep performing if they are looked after. Filter changes, seasonal checks and servicing are scheduled to protect both performance and manufacturer warranties.
