Lutron Keypads Compared: The Complete UK Specification Guide

Every current Lutron keypad family compared from the specifier's side of the table: which systems they run on, what they demand from the wall, where each excels and where it genuinely disappoints – with every figure verified against Lutron's official documentation.

Walk through any well-engineered prime home and the lighting control system is invisible – racks in a plant room, drivers above ceilings, cable in containment. The keypads are the exception. They are the only part of a six-figure electrical installation that the client touches every day, the only part guests ever see, and the part interior designers care about most. Choose well and the wall acquires a piece of precision hardware that flatters the joinery beside it. Choose late, or by picture alone, and the consequences surface at second fix: back boxes in the wrong positions and the wrong depths, engraving that holds up manufacture, finishes that fight the ironmongery, and a client pressing buttons that tell them nothing about what the house is doing.

This guide compares every current Lutron keypad family relevant to a UK or European project – Alisse, Palladiom, Aviena, International seeTouch, Architrave, Pico and Vierti – plus the US-format families you will meet in imported specifications. It is written from the specifier's side of the table: what each family actually is, which systems it runs on, what it demands from the wall, where it excels, and where it genuinely disappoints. Every specification cited here comes from Lutron's official specification submittals, application notes and product documentation, current as of July 2026 – see how this guide was researched.

The systems behind the keypads

No Lutron keypad is chosen in isolation: each family attaches to specific Lutron systems, and several exist for one system only. Understanding the system landscape first makes every comparison that follows clearer.

HomeWorks QSX is Lutron's flagship residential platform and the system on which most prime UK projects are built. Its processors provide two kinds of device connection. The first is the wired QS link – a four-conductor, safety-extra-low-voltage bus (24–36 V DC) that can run star, daisy-chain or home-run topology up to 600 m per link, supporting up to 100 devices per link. Lutron's recommended UK cable is a low-smoke zero-halogen type (QS-CBL-LSZH), which sits happily in British containment. The second is wireless Clear Connect radio, which comes in two incompatible flavours: Type A (a sub-GHz band using repeaters – 868 MHz in the UK/EU) and Type X (a 2.4 GHz mesh, added via Lutron's dual-radio wireless processor). Wired keypads – Alisse, Palladiom, Aviena, International seeTouch, Architrave, Signature Series – sit on the QS link; Pico remotes sit on the Type A radio; Vierti RF keypads sit on Type X. One caveat worth carrying from Lutron's own architecture drawing: not every product is available in every country, so a UK schedule should be confirmed against UK availability at order stage.

RadioRA 3 deserves a UK note of its own, because the received wisdom is out of date. Historically a North American system, RadioRA 3 is now officially offered in the UK through Lutron's UK residential site – and its keypad for the UK market is the new Vierti family, alongside Pico remotes. What RadioRA 3 does not offer, anywhere, is a wired QS link – which is why the architectural wired families (Alisse, Palladiom, Architrave, Aviena) are simply not available on it. If a client asks for Alisse keypads on a RadioRA 3 budget, the honest answer is that those two choices belong to different systems.

Athena and myRoom XC are Lutron's commercial and hospitality platforms, both with live UK product pages. They reuse the same wired keypad portfolio – Palladiom, seeTouch and Architrave on Athena; Palladiom, Alisse and Vierti on myRoom XC – plus Pico wireless. This matters to residential specifiers for one practical reason: a keypad language learned on a prime residence can be carried into the same client's hotel, office or marine project with minimal relearning.

Quantum is now officially described by Lutron as a legacy commercial system with an upgrade path to Athena, and Caséta – Lutron's DIY North American range – is not sold in the UK or EU at all. Neither belongs in a new UK specification.

One wiring figure worth memorising: every wired keypad in this guide draws its power from the QS link itself – typically 24–36 V DC at around 30 mA, roughly 0.6–0.7 W – so keypad positions need only the QS bus cable, no mains. That is why Lutron's wired keypads can sit in joinery, bedheads and stone reveals where a 230 V accessory could not.

Lutron Alisse

Positioning

Alisse is Lutron's thin-profile solid-metal wall control – unveiled in October 2020 as the newest member of the HomeWorks portfolio and, for UK and European work, the family we specify most often on prime residential projects. Each front plate is machined from solid brass and finished by hand, and the visible faceplate stands just 3 mm off the wall. Crucially for UK practice, Alisse is natively a European-format product: its 90.2 × 90.2 mm square faceplate is sized for a standard UK 75 × 75 mm square back box – no adaptor plates, no imported wallbox formats.

The engineering detail that makes Alisse pleasant to build with is the two-stage installation. A QS base unit installs at first fix behind a construction cover, with a single programmable pushbutton for wiring validation – so the electrician can prove the link and the programmer can begin commissioning long before the hand-finished faceplates arrive. Adapters are field-replaceable, so a two-button keypad can become a six-button keypad later without recutting the wall.

Design and practical strengths

On the wall, Alisse reads as a piece of jewellery rather than an electrical accessory: solid metal, minimal projection, round buttons with a halo of light that doubles as scene feedback and a night-time locator. The seven Signature Metal finishes – Aged Brass, Aged Bronze, Brushed Brass, Satin Nickel, Bright Chrome, Graphite, Champagne – are hand-finished, and the aged finishes vary intentionally from unit to unit, which is exactly what designers pairing them with unlacquered brass ironmongery want. The halo backlight colour temperature is matched to the finish – warm for brass tones, cool for nickel and chrome – a small detail that shows how seriously Lutron takes the materiality. For the interiors team, the finish-sample keychain kit ends the "will it match" argument at the sample table rather than after delivery.

Practically: buttons are large, tactile and guest-legible when engraved; the halo answers "did the house hear me?" at a glance; and the faceplate snaps off for redecorating.

Limitations

Alisse is HomeWorks QSX only – there is no wireless variant, no RadioRA 3 option, and no path to use it on a retrofit that cannot accommodate QS wiring. Back boxes must be at least 35 mm deep, mounted level, using the horizontal screw pair only, and wall flatness genuinely matters: Lutron's own application note is blunt that uneven plaster causes gaps and rocking, and several common European round boxes are listed by Lutron as not recommended or non-compatible. Engraving gates manufacture – legends must be agreed before keypads can be built – so a client who cannot commit to scene names will hold up the order (base units shipping ahead softens this, but does not remove it). There is no dedicated raise/lower rocker hardware; level control is programmed onto buttons.

Where it belongs, and price position

Alisse is our default recommendation for prime London residential on HomeWorks QSX: principal rooms, bedrooms, joinery-heavy interiors, and any project where the interiors team has strong views on metal finishes. Its hospitality listing (myRoom XC) also makes it a natural choice for boutique hotel suites. Price position: ££££ – solid hand-finished metal and per-unit engraving put it firmly in the premium tier, below only Palladiom's glass and signature options.

Lutron Palladiom

Positioning

Palladiom is Lutron's flagship architectural keypad line, built around a flush, uniplanar face: buttons and faceplate sit in one plane, in one continuous material, with no visible fixings. Lutron's own language is "distilled to its essence"; in specification terms the differentiators are solid metal and glass construction, backlit engraving as a core feature rather than an option, and Dynamic Backlighting Management (DBM), which continuously adjusts backlight intensity to ambient light and raises it on the active scene. Where Alisse is a piece of metalwork with round buttons, Palladiom is a monolithic surface – the most architectural object in Lutron's portfolio.

Design and practical strengths

Nothing else on the market does the flush monolithic surface at this level of execution. In glass, Palladiom disappears into dark joinery; in Signature Metals it holds its own beside bronze door hardware; in matte polymer it is the quiet, correct choice for galleries and minimalist architecture. The backlit engraving is the practical masterstroke: legends are legible at night without a torch, DBM stops the keypad glowing like an appliance in a dark bedroom, and the active scene reads brighter – so the keypad communicates state without a screen. The 25 mm minimum box depth is the shallowest of any wired family here, which solves real problems in stone cladding and shallow stud walls. A matching Palladiom thermostat and shading line let one design language run through the whole room, and a Bespoke programme supplies an unfinished front plate for custom finishing – the route to a keypad in the client's own patinated bronze.

Limitations

The constraints are geometric and procedural. Two one-column keypads side by side will not fit UK or European back boxes; three-column assemblies need Lutron's own back box, which cannot be cast into concrete; four-column units are actually two two-column units at exactly 92 mm centres – all of which must be drawn, not left to site. The 3-button layout cannot appear within two-column combinations. Engraving is effectively mandatory and gates manufacture, backlighting is white only, and materials cannot be mixed – buttons always match the faceplate, and base units are not interchangeable between polymer, metal and glass. Palladiom will not share a plate with any other Lutron family. And it is the most expensive keypad Lutron makes: glass and Signature Metal versions with engraving are a considered investment, multiplied across a whole house.

Where it belongs, and price position

Palladiom is the specification for architecturally rigorous projects – new-build prime residences, penthouses and hotels where the wall build-up can be coordinated early and the interiors scheme justifies it. In matte polymer it is also a surprisingly sensible mid-tier choice on Athena commercial projects. Price position: £££££ in metal and glass; ££££ in matte polymer.

Lutron Aviena

Positioning

Aviena is the newest family in this guide – announced in May 2025 – and the most distinctive: a heritage-styled keypad of weighted, centre-retracting mechanical toggle switches, hand-finished in solid brass. Where every other family here is a button keypad, Aviena is deliberately a bank of toggles, designed for interiors where a modern scene keypad would look anachronistic – panelled Georgian rooms, Grade II listed refurbishments, country houses. Lutron's own positioning pairs it with Alisse as part of the Signature Metal design family; the two share finishes and coordinate on the same project.

Design and practical strengths

The tactile experience is the product: a weighted brass toggle with a mechanical snap is simply more satisfying than any membrane or microswitch button, and it reads as period-correct joinery furniture rather than technology. Because each toggle distinguishes a quick flick from a hold, a single switch can carry two functions – lights on/off with a flick, a scene on a hold – so a 2-toggle plate goes further than it looks. The finishes are the same hand-applied Signature Metals as Alisse, with the same deliberate unit-to-unit variation in the aged options, and UKCA/CE approvals and UK product pages make it a legitimate UK specification, not a grey import.

Limitations

Aviena trades away almost everything a scene keypad provides. There is no status feedback at the wall – the specification documents make no provision for LEDs or backlighting – so nothing tells you which scene is active or where the switch is in a dark room. Four toggles per keypad is the ceiling, and there are no latched or button-style options. It is HomeWorks QSX only, wired only, and its recommended 60 mm box depth is the deepest of any family in this guide – the opposite of Palladiom's 25 mm, and a real constraint in shallow walls. Engraving, as with Alisse and Palladiom, is fixed at order time.

Where it belongs, and price position

Heritage and conservation interiors on HomeWorks QSX, paired with Alisse in the same finishes elsewhere in the house: Aviena in the panelled drawing room and principal bedrooms, Alisse in kitchens, corridors and bathrooms where feedback and button count matter. Price position: ££££ – solid hand-finished brass at Alisse-tier pricing.

International seeTouch

Positioning

The International seeTouch is Lutron's long-serving European-format wired keypad: an 86 × 86 mm square wallstation with large rounded backlit buttons, engraved at an upward angle for legibility. Before Alisse and Palladiom arrived it was the European Lutron keypad; today it is the workhorse option – more button configurations than anything else in the range, at a friendlier price point, in a format that fits standard UK boxes. It remains current product (the QS specification was revised in 2024), but its design language and documentation are visibly of an earlier generation.

Design and practical strengths

Capability per pound is the story. Ten-button models with master raise/lower give a cinema or principal suite enormous scene capacity on one plate; IR-receiver variants add handheld shade control; two contact-closure inputs on every unit quietly solve integration problems (a bedhead switch, a door contact) without extra hardware. The engraving certificate system is genuinely practical: keypads can be installed unengraved on day one and the engraved buttons ordered once the client has lived with the scenes – the opposite of the Alisse/Palladiom engraving gate. Field-convertible insert and frameless styles, and replacement kits that change colour, configuration and engraving without rewiring, make it the most forgiving family here for evolving projects.

Limitations

It looks like what it is: a very good keypad designed some years ago. The plates are plastic-framed rather than solid metal, metal finishes force black plastic buttons, the matte palette is only three colours, and there is no minimum one-button model (two is the floor). Most importantly for new work, the HomeWorks documentation dates from 2015, and while Lutron's UK site still lists the family, explicit HomeWorks QSX pairing is not stated in the current documents we reviewed – confirm with Lutron before scheduling it on a QSX project. Lutron's premium European story has clearly moved to Alisse and Palladiom.

Where it belongs, and price position

Back-of-house on prime projects (plant, staff areas, garages), guest rooms in hospitality, value-engineered zones of larger houses, and commercial QS/Quantum estates. Also the pragmatic choice where the client wants maximum buttons per position. Price position: £££.

Lutron Architrave

Positioning

The Architrave family exists for one situation: walls that cannot take a keypad. At 34 mm (Door Narrow) or 46 mm (Door Wide) across, it is – in Lutron's own words – the narrowest form factor available, designed to mount in door architraves, window mullions and slim reveals between joinery. On minimalist projects where the architect has banned visible switchgear, and in listed buildings where wall surfaces cannot be disturbed, Architrave is frequently the difference between a keypad where the client wants one and no keypad at all.

Design and practical strengths

Nothing else disappears like it. A Door Narrow unit in satin chrome set into a painted architrave reads as a hinge-adjacent detail, not a control; in dark anodised aluminium against dark joinery it effectively vanishes. Because it is a real QS keypad rather than a compromise, it still carries proper scene programming, raise/lower, status LEDs and contact-closure inputs. For listed buildings, mounting in the door surround rather than the historic wall fabric can be the difference between consent and refusal.

Limitations

The dedicated wallbox is the coordination trap: at 70 mm deep and 32 mm wide it fits no standard UK box, so it must be designed into the architrave or mullion build-up – a joinery drawing item, not an electrician's decision. Configuration choice is only 5-button raise/lower or 7-button; LEDs are green only on QS models; buttons are not field-replaceable; and there is no backlit-engraving system comparable with Palladiom, so night legibility depends on the LEDs. Like International seeTouch, it is a mature design – current, but not where Lutron's development is happening.

Where it belongs, and price position

Door reveals in minimalist architecture, window mullions flanking shading groups, listed interiors, and bedside joinery too slim for a square plate. Price position: £££ – plus the dedicated box and joinery time, which belong in the cost plan.

Lutron Pico

Positioning

The Pico is not an architectural keypad and does not pretend to be: it is a sealed, battery-powered wireless remote, 66 × 33 mm, that can be stuck to a wall, dropped into a bedside pedestal, clipped to a car visor or carried around the house. Its role on a prime project is supplementary – the second control point that would otherwise cost a wired position, the bedside shade control added after the walls closed, the temporary control during commissioning. On RadioRA 3 and smaller systems it carries more of the load.

Design and practical strengths

The economics are unanswerable: a control point in fifteen minutes, anywhere, with no wiring, no back box and no decoration. The 10-year coin cell means it is genuinely maintenance-free in practice. With a square metal faceplate kit on a wallbox, a Pico passes casual inspection as a wired keypad; on a bedside pedestal it solves the "controls on both sides of the bed" brief without symmetrical wiring. For retrofit clients who cannot open walls, Pico plus wireless shades is often the entire control story.

Limitations

Plastic construction in two UK colours; no backlighting and no real feedback – one LED flash is all you get; no engraving on the core models. It must live within 9 m of a repeater or processor, which on a large house means planning the Type A radio infrastructure properly (the same discipline as designing Wi-Fi coverage – radio planning is engineering, not hope). It is emphatically not the keypad for a principal reception room wall.

Where it belongs, and price position

Bedsides, retrofit additions, pool houses and garden rooms at the edge of wired scope, temporary controls, and as the standard remote on RadioRA 3 projects. Price position: £.

Lutron Vierti

Positioning

Vierti is the family UK specifiers are most likely to have missed, because it is new and it belongs to a system that used to be irrelevant here: it is the keypad of the official UK RadioRA 3 offering. It is a 220–240 V, CE/UKCA-marked wall keypad – wireless in communication (Clear Connect Type X mesh) but mains-powered at the wall – available in standard form and as a hybrid that combines a keypad with an integral dimmer or switch. For well-specified projects a tier below HomeWorks, this is Lutron's current UK answer.

Design and practical strengths

Vierti brings Lutron discipline to the mid-market: proper scene keypads, a hybrid variant that eliminates a separate dimmer position, UK box formats, and a construction cover so second fix survives the decorators. The metal wallplate options borrow Signature Metal finishes, so a RadioRA 3 project can nod to the same design language as an Alisse-equipped one. Field-changeable printed button kits keep scene names editable as the client settles in – a pragmatic alternative to engraving.

Limitations

The buttons themselves are polymer only – the metal is confined to the wallplate frame, which a designer will notice next to true Alisse. It needs mains at the keypad position (unlike the SELV wired families, this is a 230 V accessory with the associated zoning and containment implications), and Type X mesh has density rules – keypads need neighbouring powered devices within range, which small sparse installations must respect. And it is a RadioRA 3 device: on HomeWorks projects it appears only as the RF option, not a substitute for the wired families.

Where it belongs, and price position

The whole-house keypad for UK RadioRA 3 projects – high-quality apartments, secondary residences, and projects that want genuine Lutron scene control without HomeWorks infrastructure. Price position: ££.

The US-format families

Five further families exist chiefly in US formats. UK specifiers meet them in imported specifications, US-led design teams, and legacy estates – so they earn a brief, honest treatment.

Designer and Architectural seeTouch (US format)

The rectangular US seeTouch is the American counterpart of the International seeTouch: 1–7 buttons, backlit engraving, wired (QS link) and RF versions, in Designer (decorator-opening) and Architectural (squarer, Nova T plate) styles. The wired Designer version is CE- and UKCA-marked on its current specification, so it can legitimately appear on UK QSX projects – but it requires US-format wallboxes, so it does so only where a design intent demands a specific US finish or layout. The RF versions are 120 V devices with Americas-only approvals: they have no place on a UK schedule.

Signature Series

A current, quietly premium US-format family: a narrow vertical metal faceplate (121 × 46 mm) with round backlit buttons, in matte white plus twelve Architectural Metal finishes, on the wired QS link. It requires its own dedicated wallbox and is designed to be installed without ganging. Lutron markets it on its UK site, and it suits traditional interiors that want engraved round buttons in solid metal without moving to Aviena's toggle concept.

Sunnata

Sunnata is the North American RadioRA 3 keypad family – 120–277 V, US wallboxes, US approvals, Clear Connect Type X, LED light bars, 24 finishes. It is not UK/EU product; its UK-market equivalent is Vierti. Know it exists so you do not specify it from US documentation by mistake.

GRAFIK Eye QS

Not a keypad but worth its place: a wallbox scene controller with an OLED screen, per-zone raise/lower with LED bar graphs, astronomic timeclock and up to three shade columns. The CE version drives 6, 8 or 16 zones of DALI from an integral bus supply – a self-contained lighting control system for a single significant room. The UK site trap: even the CE unit mounts in a 4-gang US-style back box, which must be procured with it.

GRAFIK T, Maestro and the legacy lines

GRAFIK T touch hybrids and the Maestro range are 120 V US products, and RadioRA 2 is formally legacy with a documented conversion path to RadioRA 3. None belongs in a new UK specification; all matter when surveying an existing US-influenced installation for an upgrade.

The architect, the designer and the homeowner

The architect's choice is usually Palladiom or Architrave, because both serve architecture first: Palladiom when the wall is a designed surface and the keypad should read as part of it, Architrave when the wall should carry nothing at all. Palladiom's engraving discipline appeals to the same instinct that specifies shadow gaps – everything resolved, nothing improvised. On heritage work the instinct flips: Aviena's toggles, or Architrave in the door surround, keep modern control out of the historic wall.

The interior designer's choice is most often Alisse, because it behaves like ironmongery: real metal, hand finishing, aged variation, and a halo that warms or cools to match the finish. Against wood panelling and stone, Aged Brass or Aged Bronze Alisse (or Aviena, in period rooms) sits comfortably beside unlacquered hardware; in contemporary schemes, Graphite and Satin Nickel align with tapware and door furniture; for pure minimalism, Palladiom in matte polymer or glass keeps the wall quiet. Vierti's metal wallplates borrow the same finishes at a lower tier – a useful trick on mixed-budget projects.

The homeowner's experience ranks differently. Palladiom gives the clearest at-a-glance answer to "what is the house doing?" – backlit legends, brighter on the active scene. Alisse is the most pleasant daily object and its halo makes night navigation effortless. International seeTouch is the easiest for guests, because ten engraved buttons ask no interpretation. Aviena is the most satisfying to touch but tells you nothing back. Pico is the one everyone actually keeps on the bedside table.

Common specification mistakes

  1. Choosing by photograph. A keypad family is a system decision (which platform), an electrical decision (bus or mains at the wall), and a joinery decision (box depth) before it is an aesthetic one. The picture is the last step, not the first – the same discipline as avoiding the wrong platform entirely.
  2. Back box schedules issued late. Alisse wants ≥35 mm with its shallow connector, Palladiom only 25 mm, Aviena 60 mm, Architrave its own 70 mm joinery box. If the schedule reaches site after first fix, the walls are already wrong somewhere.
  3. Engraving treated as an afterthought. On Alisse, Palladiom and Aviena, manufacture waits for engraving sign-off. Scene names agreed in week one prevent keypads arriving in week twenty.
  4. Scene names nobody understands. "Scene 1" through "Scene 4" wastes the entire point of engraving. Name what the room does – Cook, Dine, Entertain, Off – and guests never ask how the lights work.
  5. Mixing families without a plan. Families do not share plates, and their finishes differ subtly even when names match. Decide the palette per floor or per zone – Alisse plus Aviena works because Lutron designed them together; improvised mixes rarely do.
  6. Forgetting the radio plan. Picos need Type A coverage, Vierti needs Type X mesh density. Wireless is engineering, not magic – plan it like Wi-Fi.
  7. Assuming US documentation applies. Sunnata, US seeTouch RF, Caséta: much of what Google returns about "Lutron keypads" is US product that is not certified or sold here. Check the UK documents.
  8. No spare capacity. A house evolves. Two-column base units with field-replaceable adapters (Alisse) or replacement kits (seeTouch, Vierti) preserve options; the cheapest insurance is a keypad family that can change its mind. More in our future-proofing guide.

Our recommendations by role

  • Architects – specify the keypad family alongside RIBA Stage 3 coordination, not at interiors sign-off: box depths and formats belong on the wall build-up drawings. Palladiom for designed surfaces, Architrave for invisible control, and insist on the engraving schedule early.
  • Interior designers – order the finish chip kits (Alisse/Aviena Signature Metals, Palladiom architectural finishes) before committing; aged finishes vary by design, and clients should approve that variation on a physical sample, not a render.
  • Electrical consultants – the wired families are SELV QS-link devices (~0.6–0.7 W, one PDU per column); design the link topology, respect the 600 m and 100-device limits, use LSZH bus cable, and note Vierti is the exception that needs 230 V at the plate.
  • Lighting designers – Palladiom's dynamic backlighting and Alisse's halo are part of the night-time lighting scheme; scene structure (and therefore button count) should come from the lighting design, not default keypad layouts.
  • Developers – standardise: one family for principal areas, International seeTouch or Vierti for secondary zones, engraved consistently across plots. Buyers notice keypads; snagging teams notice families that allow field changes.
  • Homeowners – judge with your fingers, not just your eyes: press Alisse, Palladiom and Aviena side by side in a showroom. Then insist your integrator names every scene in plain English before engraving.
  • Systems integrators – gate your orders on engraving sign-off, ship Alisse/Palladiom base units early to keep wiring and commissioning moving, and put the back box schedule in writing to the main contractor before first fix. There is no single best – each family serves a different brief. For prime UK residential on HomeWorks QSX, Alisse is the most common flagship choice; Palladiom is the architectural statement; Aviena serves heritage interiors; International seeTouch maximises buttons per pound; Vierti and Pico serve RadioRA 3 and retrofit. The best keypad is the one whose system, back box and finish story fits your project.

What is the difference between Alisse and Palladiom?+

Alisse is a thin solid-brass plate with round, halo-lit buttons standing 3 mm off the wall; Palladiom is a flush, uniplanar surface where buttons and faceplate sit in one continuous material with white backlit engraving. Alisse feels like fine ironmongery; Palladiom reads as architecture. Palladiom offers glass and needs only 25 mm of box depth; Alisse needs 35 mm and offers hand-finished aged metals.

Is Palladiom worth it?+

On the right project, yes. You are paying for solid metal or glass construction, a completely flush face, engraved legends that light legibly at night, and backlighting that adapts to ambient light. In principal rooms of a design-led house it delivers daily, visible value; in secondary spaces a more modest family usually serves better.

Which Lutron keypads work in the UK?+

Alisse, Palladiom, Aviena, International seeTouch, Architrave, Signature Series, Pico (UK 868 MHz models) and Vierti are all legitimately available for UK projects, with CE/UKCA-marked options and UK product pages. US-format RF seeTouch, Sunnata and Caséta products are North American and should not appear on UK schedules.

Does Lutron RadioRA 3 work in the UK?+

Yes – RadioRA 3 is now officially offered in the UK through Lutron's UK residential site. The UK keypad family for it is Vierti (not Sunnata, which is the US equivalent), alongside Pico remotes, wireless in-line controls and shading.

Can I use Alisse or Palladiom keypads with RadioRA 3?+

No. Alisse and Palladiom are wired QS-link keypads, and RadioRA 3 has no wired keypad bus. Lutron's catalogue lists them for HomeWorks, myRoom XC and Athena only. If solid-metal architectural keypads are essential, the platform decision effectively becomes HomeWorks QSX.

Is the Pico a professional keypad?+

It is a professional tool rather than an architectural keypad: sealed, battery-powered, reliable, and supported across most Lutron systems. It excels as a supplementary control – bedsides, retrofit points, temporary controls – but it has plastic construction, no backlighting and no scene feedback, so it should not carry a principal wall.

Can a Pico replace a wired keypad?+

Functionally it recalls scenes and controls zones like a wired keypad, and with a square faceplate kit it can occupy a wallbox position convincingly. What you give up is feedback (one flashing LED only), engraving on most models, premium materials and backlighting. In secondary locations that trade is often worth making; in principal rooms it rarely is.

How long does a Pico battery last?+

Lutron claims 10 years on the included CR2032 coin cell, footnoted as assuming around ten button presses a day at 30 °C. Real projects treat it as effectively maintenance-free, with batteries replaced opportunistically during other service visits.

What is Lutron Aviena?+

Aviena is Lutron's heritage-styled keypad family, launched in 2025: weighted mechanical toggle switches in hand-finished solid brass, for HomeWorks QSX via the wired QS link. Each toggle distinguishes a quick flick from a push-and-hold, so one switch can carry two functions. It shares Signature Metal finishes with Alisse and is designed to coordinate with it.

Does Aviena have LED indicators or backlighting?+

Lutron's specification documents make no provision for LEDs or backlighting on Aviena – it is a purely mechanical toggle interface, and nothing at the wall indicates scene status. Where feedback matters, pair Aviena rooms with Alisse or Palladiom elsewhere, or accept the traditional behaviour as part of its character.

Which keypad suits a listed building?+

Aviena for period-correct toggles in principal rooms, and Architrave where controls must move into door surrounds or joinery rather than historic wall fabric. Both keep modern scene control available without modern-looking hardware on protected surfaces. Wireless Pico points can avoid chasing walls entirely.

What is the narrowest Lutron keypad?+

Architrave – Lutron describes it as the narrowest form factor available. The Door Narrow faceplate is about 34 mm wide (Door Wide is 46 mm) and 114 mm tall, designed for door architraves, window mullions and slim reveals. It requires Lutron's dedicated narrow wallbox, around 70 mm deep.

What back box does Lutron Alisse need?+

A UK-style square box 75 × 75 mm at least 35 mm deep, or a compatible round box (Lutron publishes a tested list – some common European round boxes are not recommended or will not fit). The supplied shallow QS connector must be used in boxes 35–45 mm deep, mounting uses the horizontal screw pair only, and the box must be level and flush in a flat wall.

What back box does Palladiom need?+

For the International Square format: a standard 75 × 75 mm square or 68 mm round box at least 25 mm deep – unusually shallow. The exceptions are drawn in Lutron's application note: three-column units need Lutron's own EBB-1-3COL box (hollow wall or plaster only), four-column units are two boxes at exactly 92 mm centres, and two single-column units side by side will not fit UK/European boxes.

How deep must the back box be for each Lutron keypad?+

Palladiom needs at least 25 mm, Alisse and International seeTouch at least 35 mm, Vierti 35 mm minimum with 47 mm recommended, Aviena 60 mm recommended, and Architrave uses its own 70 mm-deep dedicated box. This spread is exactly why the keypad schedule must be fixed before first fix.

Do Lutron wired keypads need mains power at the wall?+

No – Alisse, Palladiom, Aviena, seeTouch and Architrave are safety-extra-low-voltage devices powered from the QS link itself (24–36 V DC, typically under a watt). Only the bus cable reaches the keypad position. Vierti is the exception: it is mains-powered at 220–240 V, communicating wirelessly.

What is the Lutron QS link?+

The QS link is Lutron's four-conductor low-voltage wired bus: a power pair and a shielded data pair, free topology (star, daisy-chain or home run), up to 600 m and 100 devices per link, with keypad power drawn from the bus. Lutron recommends its LSZH cable for UK containment. It is what all the architectural wired keypads attach to.

What is the difference between Clear Connect Type A and Type X?+

They are two incompatible Lutron radio technologies. Type A is a sub-GHz system (868 MHz in the UK/EU) using repeaters – Pico remotes live here. Type X is a 2.4 GHz mesh – Vierti keypads live here. A system can host both via the appropriate processors, but devices from one type never talk to the other.

Are UK and US Lutron keypads interchangeable?+

No. Wireless products use different radio frequencies (US 431–437 MHz vs UK/EU 868 MHz) and are physically incompatible, while wired US-format keypads need American wallbox formats and, in some cases, carry no CE/UKCA marking. Always specify from the UK/international documentation.

Which Lutron keypad has the best button feel?+

Aviena's weighted mechanical toggles are the most tactile objects Lutron makes. Among button keypads, Alisse's round metal-set buttons and Palladiom's flush faces both have precise, confident actuation – the meaningful difference is feedback: Palladiom answers with brighter backlighting on the active scene, Alisse with its halo.

Which Lutron keypad looks most premium?+

Palladiom in glass or Signature Metal is the flagship – a flush, single-material surface with backlit engraving. Alisse runs it close with hand-finished solid brass and deliberate aged variation. The honest answer is that they are different kinds of premium: Palladiom is architectural, Alisse is artisanal.

Can Lutron keypads control blinds and curtains?+

Yes – shading control is core to every family. Raise/lower configurations exist across Alisse, Palladiom, seeTouch, Architrave, Pico and Vierti, and shade-specific button columns (open, presets, close) are standard options. Lutron's own Sivoia shading integrates natively; tapping any shade button stops movement.

How is engraving ordered on Lutron keypads?+

For Alisse, Palladiom and Aviena, engraving is specified through Lutron's myProjects tools at order time – and manufacture does not begin until legends are confirmed, so scene naming belongs early in the programme. International seeTouch is more forgiving: unengraved keypads ship with an engraving certificate redeemable later, once the client has lived with the scenes.

How long does Lutron engraving take?+

Lutron publishes no official engraving lead times – they are quoted per order through your dealer. What the documentation does make clear is that engraved orders are not manufactured until legends are signed off, and that Alisse and Palladiom base units can ship in advance so wiring and commissioning are not held up.

What should be engraved on the buttons?+

What the room does, in plain language: Cook, Dine, Entertain, Relax, Off – not Scene 1 to Scene 4. Good scene names are the difference between a house guests can operate and one they apologise for. Agree them with the client before ordering, because on the premium families they gate manufacture.

Can Lutron keypad buttons be changed later?+

Depends on the family. seeTouch and Vierti use field-changeable replacement kits (colour, configuration and legends); Alisse adapters are field-replaceable and its faceplates snap off; Palladiom button kits can be re-ordered with new engraving, and a raise/lower kit can swap to 4-button in the field. Architrave buttons are not field-replaceable – only its faceplates change.

How many buttons can a Lutron keypad have?+

Per position: International seeTouch goes furthest at up to 10 buttons (acting as two independent columns); Palladiom reaches 4 per column across up to 4 columns; Alisse offers 1–6 in single or double columns (with triple-column layouts in the specification); Architrave offers 5+raise/lower or 7; Aviena tops out at 4 toggles; Picos at 4 buttons.

Do Lutron keypads work with Crestron?+

Yes – on large projects Lutron keypads routinely control lighting and shading while Crestron provides whole-house integration, using the manufacturer-supported integration between the two platforms. Which Lutron keypads suit a hotel project?+

Palladiom and Alisse are the premium guestroom choices via myRoom XC and Athena, with Pico as the bedside control and Vierti as a wireless option. The same finishes used residentially carry across, which is why hospitality designers who know the residential families adapt quickly.

What colour finishes do Lutron keypads come in?+

Alisse: 11 finishes (seven Signature Metals, four painted). Palladiom: 22 (ten mattes, eight metals, two Signature Metals, two glass). Aviena: five Signature Metals. Architrave: 13 (matte white, nine metals, three anodised). International seeTouch: three mattes plus metal, custom anodised and a glass option. Do the aged brass finishes vary between keypads?+

Yes, deliberately. Lutron states that Aged Brass and Aged Bronze (Alisse, Aviena) and Palladiom's Antique Brass are handcrafted finishes with natural unit-to-unit variation in hue and graining. Clients should approve a physical chip sample – Lutron supplies keychain sample kits – rather than a photograph.

How do you clean metal Lutron keypads?+

Lutron's official guidance: wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap, never spray anything directly onto the device, and if disinfection is needed use hydrogen-peroxide-based products on a wipe. Avoid bleach, isopropyl alcohol and ethanol, which can degrade finishes and markings, and never paint controls or faceplates.

How long do Lutron keypads last, and what is the warranty?+

The hardware routinely serves for decades – power-failure memory, no batteries in the wired families, and field-changeable kits extend life further. Under Lutron's international warranty, HomeWorks product carries a sliding scale (full cover to year two, reducing to year eight); the terms cover residential applications, with commercial applications capped at two years. Product pages for some families advertise eight-year terms in the US – check which warranty applies to your contract.

Are Lutron keypads future-proof?+

As future-proof as this category gets: the QS wired link has carried several processor generations, keypad families span decades of support, and replacement kits update legends and configurations without rewiring. Can different Lutron keypad families be mixed in one house?+

Yes, and well-designed projects do it deliberately – Alisse with Aviena is a Lutron-intended pairing sharing the same finishes; International seeTouch commonly serves back-of-house behind an Alisse front-of-house. What you cannot do is gang different families on one plate, and finish names do not always match across families, so plan the palette explicitly.

Do Lutron keypads need a neutral wire?+

The wired architectural families need no mains at all – just the low-voltage QS bus. Of the mains devices, Vierti standard keypads need live and neutral; the Vierti hybrid can dim without a neutral (up to 150 W of LED) but needs one to switch. This is often the deciding detail in retrofit wiring surveys.

What is a hybrid keypad?+

A keypad with a load controller built in – one device that is both the scene keypad and the dimmer/switch for a local circuit. In the UK range that is Vierti hybrid (150 W LED dimming, 250 W ELV with neutral); the US equivalents are Sunnata and seeTouch hybrids. Hybrids suit retrofits because they replace an existing switch position without new wiring.

Can Lutron keypads be mounted without a back box?+

Two cases: Pico needs no box at all – it mounts with adhesive or screws anywhere, or sits in a faceplate kit over an existing box. Architrave's specification notes a wallbox may not be required for all installations, subject to local codes for low-voltage Class 2 devices, and Palladiom publishes surface-mount hole schematics. Everything else expects a proper box – and BS 7671 and manufacturer instructions always govern.

What is the difference between seeTouch International and US seeTouch?+

Format and range. International seeTouch is an 86 mm square plate for UK/European boxes with 2–10 button configurations; US seeTouch is a 119 × 75 mm rectangle for American boxes with 1–7 buttons and a wider colour palette, in wired and (US-only) RF versions. On UK projects, the International version is the correct specification.

What does a Lutron keypad cost in the UK?+

Lutron publishes no list prices – keypads are quoted through dealers, and cost varies with finish, engraving and configuration. As positioning: Pico sits at entry level, Vierti above it, International seeTouch and Architrave mid-range, Alisse and Aviena in the premium tier, and Palladiom – especially in glass and Signature Metals – at the top. Budget per-position, and remember boxes, engraving and programming belong in the same line.

Which Lutron system should a UK prime residence use?+

HomeWorks QSX is the flagship and the only route to the architectural wired keypads (Alisse, Palladiom, Aviena, Architrave). RadioRA 3 with Vierti is the UK option a tier below – wireless, excellent for retrofit and smaller projects, but without the wired keypad families. The platform choice therefore largely determines the keypad choice, which is why both belong in the same early design conversation.

Who should install and program Lutron keypads?+

A Lutron-trained integrator or contractor: system programming, engraving management and commissioning run through Lutron's professional software, and the premium families assume dealer-managed ordering. The electrical contractor installs boxes and bus wiring to the schedule; the integrator owns addressing, programming and client handover.
