Crestron multiroom audio is a professionally designed whole-home music system built on Crestron's DM NAX audio-over-IP platform. What is Crestron multiroom audio?

Crestron is an American control and automation manufacturer that has been building professional AV systems since 1972, with its technology installed everywhere from private residences to the Pentagon, NASA facilities and the White House. Its residential platform, Crestron Home, runs lighting, climate, shading, security and entertainment as one coordinated system – and audio is one of the things it does best.

The audio engine of a modern Crestron home is the DM NAX platform: a family of network amplifiers, preamplifiers and converters that treat music as ordinary network traffic. Crestron describes the flagship DM-NAX-8ZSA as "a next generation Audio-over-IP (AoIP) amplifier that puts Crestron multiroom audio distribution on the network". In practice, one of these units powers eight rooms of speakers from two rack units of space, and each of those eight zones has its own independent streaming player built in – so eight people can listen to eight different things at once.

Because distribution runs over the network, the system's size is decided by the project, not the product. Crestron states that a single DM NAX system under a Crestron Home processor can coordinate up to 32 DM NAX devices and up to 256 audio output zones – far beyond what even the largest private residence requires, which is precisely the point. Invisible audio and interior design

For many of our clients – and for nearly every interior designer we work with – the finest speaker is the one nobody can find. Invisible speakers make that literal. They are engineered panels that install into the wall or ceiling and disappear beneath the final finish, radiating sound through the surface itself.

The technology is mature and, importantly for a Crestron system, passive – invisible speakers are driven by conventional amplification like any other speaker. Three manufacturers dominate the category:

For interior design, this changes what is possible. Listed buildings and period plasterwork keep their ceilings clean of grilles. A gallery wall carries only art. Polished-plaster and microcement surfaces stay unbroken. The lighting designer no longer negotiates ceiling real estate with speaker grilles – a genuine consideration once downlights, detectors and air valves have taken their places.

Where fully invisible is unnecessary, small-aperture architectural speakers achieve near-invisibility at lower cost: round, bezel-free grilles painted to match the ceiling, sized and positioned to align with the lighting layout. Simple control for everyday users

A system this capable must remain effortless for the people who live with it, including guests who have never seen a Crestron interface before. This is a design priority for Crestron: the July 2025 release of Crestron Home OS – version 4.6, which the company titled "The Best Audio Experience Yet" – rebuilt the music experience around a simple idea: from opening the app to music playing should take four taps.

The app's Music Tile shows what is playing throughout the home at a glance, with album art and playback status. Choosing music is a matter of tapping the tile, selecting one room or several, picking a source and pressing play. A multi-room volume slider adjusts the whole selection together while retaining individual room control, and favourites – stations, playlists, most-played artists – sit one tap inside source selection. Rooms can be added to or removed from the music on the fly as an evening moves from kitchen to dining room to terrace.

Control is deliberately layered, so every member of the household can use the system their own way:

  • The Crestron Home app on iPhone, iPad or Android – the full system in your pocket, at home or away.
  • Touch screens – elegant tabletop and wall-mounted glass panels for principal rooms and circulation spaces.
  • Keypads – Crestron's Horizon and Cameo 2 keypads put scenes and music on the wall as beautifully engraved buttons: press "Dinner" and the lighting, blinds and playlist follow. No screen required.
  • Handheld remote – the Cevo Mini remote for media rooms, with voice control introduced in a recent OS update.
  • AirPlay 2 – for guests and quick moments, any Apple device can send audio straight to any room, with no app to install.

The result is a system with no manual. The four-year-old uses the keypad, the teenager uses AirPlay, the owner uses the app, and the housekeeper uses the touch screen – all controlling the same music, in the same rooms, without conflict.

AirPlay 2 and music services

Music services are where a professionally installed system must meet people exactly where they already are. Households arrive with subscriptions, playlists and habits, and the system's job is to honour all of them. Crestron approaches this in two complementary ways, and the distinction is worth understanding because it is often blurred in marketing elsewhere.

Services built into the Crestron system

Crestron's streaming hardware – the DM-NAX-8ZSA and DM-NAX-4ZSP, plus the compact DM-NAX-4ZSA-50 – carries an independent streaming player for every zone. These services are integrated natively: accounts are linked once during commissioning, and the services then appear inside the Crestron app, touch screens and keypads themselves. Spotify deserves a special mention: Crestron's Spotify Connect integration supports multiple accounts with per-room favourites, so "play my Discover Weekly in the kitchen" genuinely means yours, not whoever linked their account first.

More services through AirPlay 2

AirPlay 2 is Apple's technology for streaming audio from an iPhone, iPad or Mac to speakers around the home – and Crestron's streaming products are AirPlay 2 endpoints. Every audio zone you choose to enable appears in the speaker list on the family's Apple devices. Play anything on the phone, tap the AirPlay icon, tick a room or several, and the sound moves seamlessly onto the home's architectural speakers, in sync across rooms. Apple's own description is apt: play the same music everywhere, "or play something different in every room".

This matters because it opens the system to effectively the entire audio world on the user's device, without waiting for a native integration:

Two honest caveats. First, AirPlay depends on the sending device: it streams what the phone or tablet plays, so it is casting rather than native integration, and playback is controlled primarily from that device. Second, AirPlay requires a compatible Apple device – iPhones and iPads on iOS 11.4 or later, or a Mac – so Android-only households will lean on the built-in services, which cover the mainstream UK subscriptions well. Multiroom audio is at its best when it stops being a separate system. Crestron Home runs audio as one thread of a whole-home fabric that also carries lighting, shading, climate, security, video and door entry – and the value compounds when those threads are woven together.

Consider the difference in lived experience. "Entertain" on a single keypad button dims the lighting to the evening scene, lowers the blinds against the low sun, and starts the dinner playlist in the kitchen, dining room and terrace at a considered volume. "Goodnight" fades the music everywhere, closes the shades, sets back the heating and arms the perimeter. A doorbell press can duck the music in the rooms nearest the front door. None of this is exotic programming – it is the everyday grammar of an integrated home, and it is precisely what a collection of single-purpose apps cannot do.

Crestron versus Sonos

This is the comparison clients ask for most often, and it deserves a fair answer rather than a partisan one. Sonos is an excellent product. It brought effortless multiroom streaming to millions of homes, its app is polished, it supports AirPlay 2 across its current range, and its services directory runs to well over a hundred streaming services. For a flat, a smaller home or a first taste of multiroom audio, Sonos is often exactly the right choice – and we say so.

The honest distinction is not quality but architecture and intent: Sonos is a consumer ecosystem you assemble, while Crestron is a professional platform that is designed, engineered and commissioned around a specific property. That difference expresses itself in ways that matter more as homes get larger and expectations get higher.

Where the equipment lives. Sonos is predominantly a distributed system: powered speakers sit in the rooms, on shelves and furniture, each needing mains power and network access. Its Amp products can drive passive architectural speakers from a rack, but the system's centre of gravity remains in-room. A Crestron system is centralised by design – amplification for the whole house sits in one serviceable rack, and rooms contain only speakers.

How big it can grow. Sonos officially supports up to 32 products in a single system – generous for most homes, and a real constraint only in very large properties. A Crestron DM NAX system under Crestron Home coordinates up to 32 DM NAX devices and up to 256 output zones. For a London townhouse either would cope; for an estate with garden buildings, a spa and a gym, only one of them was designed with that scale in mind.

Who designs it. Sonos zones are as good as their placement, and placement follows furniture and power sockets. In a Crestron project, speaker positions are coordinated on drawings with the lighting, ventilation and joinery; each zone is EQ-tuned to its room at commissioning; and the cabling is planned at first fix. Professional design is not an indulgence – it is why the last room sounds like the first.

The interface. The Sonos app is the Sonos system. Crestron offers an app too – but also engraved wall keypads, glass touch screens, handheld remotes and scene buttons that tie audio to lighting and shading, all customised to the household. Guests and staff can operate a Crestron home without installing anything.

Speakers and invisibility. Sonos sounds very good, and its Architectural by Sonance passive range (driven by Sonos Amp) is genuinely capable – the Amp can also power third-party passive speakers, though features such as Trueplay room tuning are reserved for the Architectural models, and there is no plaster-over invisible option in the Sonos range itself. Crestron drives passive speakers from any suitable manufacturer, including fully invisible panels from Amina, Stealth Acoustics and Sonance.

Integration. Sonos participates in smart homes; Crestron orchestrates them. The fair comparison arrives at the scale where you would need many Sonos products, professional installation and architectural speakers anyway: there, the gap narrows, and what the Crestron premium buys is engineering – central equipment, custom control, room-tuned sound, integration and long-term serviceability. It is also worth noting that Sonos itself has moved towards the professional channel in recent years with installer-focused amplifiers, which says something encouraging about where residential audio is heading: professionally installed, discreet and centralised.

Why professional system design matters

The difference between a good multiroom audio system and a frustrating one is rarely the hardware. It is the hundred decisions taken before anything is unboxed – and most of them are invisible in the finished home, which is exactly why they are so often skipped.

Zoning is design, not plumbing. Which spaces share music, which are independent, where a large open-plan room needs two acoustic zones behind one name in the app – these choices shape how the home feels to live in, and they are made with the client, on plan, before cabling.

Speaker placement is coordinated, not opportunistic. Ceiling speakers negotiate with downlights, detectors, sprinklers and air valves. In-wall speakers respect joinery and artwork. Commissioning is where sound quality happens. Every zone is measured and EQ-tuned to its actual room – its glass, stone, curtains and furniture – and scenes, volume limits and schedules are programmed to the household's rhythm. How many rooms can a Crestron audio system cover?+

Crestron states that a single DM NAX system with a Crestron Home processor supports up to 32 DM NAX devices and up to 256 audio output zones. In practice that is far beyond any private residence – projects from four zones to forty-plus use exactly the same architecture.

Can different music play in different rooms at the same time?+

Yes. Each zone on Crestron's streaming amplifiers has its own independent streaming player – a single DM-NAX-8ZSA carries eight – so different people can listen to different services simultaneously. Rooms can also be grouped and ungrouped on the fly as an evening moves through the house.

Can I use any brand of speakers with a Crestron system?+

Crestron amplifiers drive standard passive loudspeakers, so virtually any suitable brand and format can be specified: in-ceiling, in-wall, invisible, outdoor, landscape or freestanding. AVC selects speakers on merit for each room – Bowers & Wilkins, KEF, Monitor Audio, Origin Acoustics, Amina and others – rather than being tied to one ecosystem.

What are invisible speakers, and do they really work?+

They are engineered panels installed in the wall or ceiling and hidden beneath the final finish. Amina panels, designed and manufactured in the UK, are covered with a standard 2 to 3 mm plaster skim; Stealth Acoustics panels are finished with ordinary paint or wallpaper; Sonance Invisible Series disappears beneath up to 3 mm of finish material. All are passive speakers driven by the central Crestron amplifiers, and the technology is mature and widely used in prime interiors.

What is AirPlay 2?+

Apple's technology for streaming audio from an iPhone, iPad or Mac to speakers around the home. Crestron audio zones appear in the AirPlay speaker list on the family's Apple devices, so anything playing on the device can be sent to one room or several in sync across rooms. Apple lists iOS 11.4 or later as the requirement for streaming audio from an iPhone or iPad.

Which music services are built into a Crestron system?+

Crestron's official documentation for its DM NAX streaming products lists Spotify Connect, TIDAL, Deezer, Qobuz, Amazon Music, internet radio and podcasts, along with Pandora, SiriusXM and SOUNDMACHINE, which are aimed mainly at North American or commercial users. Accounts are linked once during commissioning and the services then appear directly in the Crestron interfaces.

Does Crestron support Apple Music?+

Apple Music plays through a Crestron system via AirPlay 2 from any compatible Apple device, and Crestron's product page lists Apple Music alongside its streaming services. Unlike the built-in services, playback starts from the Apple device: you press play on the phone and choose which rooms should hear it.

Does Spotify work with Crestron?+

Yes, in two ways. Spotify Connect is built into Crestron's streaming hardware with multi-account support, so each family member keeps their own account, favourites and presets. Spotify also lists Apple AirPlay among its supported connections, so it streams from Apple devices as well.

Can I listen to BBC Sounds and UK radio on a Crestron system?+

Yes. BBC Sounds on an iPhone or iPad streams to any Crestron zone via the standard iOS AirPlay picker. The system's built-in internet radio also offers stations from around the world, including UK broadcasters, with no account required.

Where does all the equipment go?+

In one central equipment rack – typically in a plant room, basement or dedicated AV cupboard – alongside the network and the rest of the home's technology. The rack is ventilated, tidy and serviceable, and the rooms themselves contain nothing but discreet speakers and, where designed, a keypad or touch screen.

Is Crestron reliable?+

Reliability is the platform's defining characteristic, and it comes from architecture: a wired backbone, professional-grade rack equipment and formal commissioning by a trained integrator. Crestron has manufactured control systems since 1972, and its technology serves demanding environments from private estates to government facilities. No honest integrator promises that nothing will ever fail – but faults are rare, and centralised equipment means they are diagnosed and resolved in the rack, not behind your walls.

What maintenance does a Crestron audio system need?+

Very little routine maintenance: periodic software updates, an occasional check of rack ventilation and the ordinary care of any engineered service. AVC maintains the systems we install, and many adjustments – renaming rooms, linking a new streaming account, tweaking a scene – are handled remotely without a site visit.

How is the system controlled day to day?+

However each person prefers. The Crestron Home app puts the whole system on a phone or tablet; glass touch screens serve principal rooms; engraved Horizon and Cameo keypads put favourite scenes on the wall; the Cevo Mini remote covers media rooms, with voice control added in a recent OS update; and AirPlay 2 lets any Apple device send music straight to a room. Since the July 2025 Crestron Home release, starting music takes about four taps.

Does the system work if the internet goes down?+

The control system runs on the home's own network, so keypads, touch screens and the app continue to work locally, and locally connected sources in the rack keep playing. Internet-dependent functions – streaming services, internet radio and remote access – naturally need the connection, and resume when it returns.

Can a turntable, CD player or the television join the system?+

Yes. Crestron's streaming amplifier provides four stereo analogue inputs and four digital inputs, so a turntable, CD player or television can be shared with any room in the house. Line-level, XLR and USB wall plates from the same family bring sources onto the network from elsewhere in the property.

Can guests play their own music easily?+

Guests with an iPhone or iPad simply use AirPlay 2 – the rooms appear in their speaker list with nothing to install. For Android users, the built-in services are available from the room interfaces, and a discreet Crestron Bluetooth wall plate can be added to a zone for simple direct pairing.

Does Crestron audio work outdoors?+

Yes. A 70/100-volt amplifier in the same DM NAX family drives landscape audio systems – discreet garden satellites and buried subwoofers from ranges such as Sonance Landscape Series and Origin Acoustics Seasons – while weather-rated architectural speakers serve terraces and loggias. Outdoor zones behave like any other room in the app, with their own volume limits and schedules.

Is Crestron better than Sonos?+

They are different tools. Sonos is an excellent consumer ecosystem, ideal for smaller or less complex homes, with official support for up to 32 products per system. Crestron is a professional platform engineered for large, highly customised properties: centralised equipment, bespoke interfaces, freedom to use any passive speaker including invisible models, whole-home integration and room-by-room tuning. The right answer follows the brief, not the brand.

Can Crestron and Sonos work together?+

Yes. Crestron officially supports Sonos integration within Crestron Home, allowing devices from one Sonos household to be added to the system once they are set up in the Sonos app. An existing Sonos investment can therefore join the whole-home system rather than be discarded.

How much does a Crestron multiroom audio system cost?+

It depends on the number of zones, the speakers selected and the degree of integration with lighting, shading and the wider home, so responsible integrators quote per project rather than per brochure. A professionally designed system does cost more at the outset than consumer equipment; the investment buys engineering, discretion, dependability and longevity. AVC provides itemised proposals following an initial conversation about the property and the brief.

Can Crestron audio be retrofitted into an existing house?+

Often, yes. A renovation is the ideal moment, while walls and ceilings are open. In finished properties, an experienced integrator surveys cable routes through risers, voids and joinery before promising anything; where routes are genuinely impossible, hybrid approaches – including integrating Sonos zones into Crestron Home – can bridge the gap gracefully.

What needs to happen at first fix?+

Speaker cabling, containment and back boxes are installed while the walls are open, coordinated on drawings with lighting, ventilation and joinery. Invisible speakers in particular must be decided before plastering, as they are built into the fabric of the wall or ceiling. AVC issues the drawings, schedules and specifications the main contractor needs, as part of our wider MEP coordination.

What is AES67, in plain terms?+

An open industry standard for carrying high-quality audio over ordinary data networks. Crestron's DM NAX platform is built on it, which is why the system scales by adding devices rather than replacing them, and why it interoperates with Crestron's DM NVX video platform, Dante-based equipment in AES67 mode and other standards-compliant systems. For an owner it translates to longevity and easy expansion.

Does the system support voice control?+

In several qualified ways. Crestron Home added voice control with its Cevo Mini remote in a recent OS update; Crestron documents Amazon voice services on the DM-NAX-8ZSA when used with Crestron Home; and Apple users can ask Siri to direct AirPlay playback to a room. As with any voice feature, behaviour depends on configuration, region and the services enabled, so we set expectations honestly during design.

Will the system become obsolete?+

The parts that are hardest to change – cabling and passive speakers – are also the longest-lived, and the networked architecture means electronics are added or exchanged incrementally rather than wholesale. Crestron has been building professional systems for more than fifty years and distributes updates through its integrator network. No electronics last forever, but this is as future-considerate as residential audio currently gets.

How does sound quality compare with consumer multiroom systems?+

Sound quality is decided by speakers, amplification and tuning more than by logos. A Crestron system's advantage is freedom and consistency: reference-grade passive speakers can be specified wherever they matter, every zone receives per-room equalisation at commissioning, and the fortieth zone performs like the first. A well-placed consumer speaker sounds good in its room; a commissioned system sounds right throughout the property.

Can bathrooms, spas and steam areas have music?+

Yes. Architectural speaker ranges include models suited to humid environments, and placement respects the safety zones required by the wiring regulations. The amplifier stays safely in the rack, which is one of the quiet advantages of centralised architecture in wet areas.

Who programs and supports the system?+

Crestron is sold and installed through trained integrators rather than off the shelf. AVC designs, programs, commissions and documents every system we deliver, then supports it for the long term – including remote support for the everyday adjustments a living household generates.
